Arts and crafts ’training program is an annual program implemented by the Culture Department and it is designed to help the unemployed youth in the municipality attain skills to enable them earn some income.
This helps them to provide for their needs and not to be a liability to society.

The Arts and Craft Program Aims At:
• Heightening of Interest in Made in Ghana products, thereby promoting patronage.
• Providing Employment for the youth in the municipality.

The training took place at Alajo Central Pentecost Church.
A total of 20 People took part in the training with 18 being Females and 2 Males.

BEAD MAKING
The first part of the training which iis bead making took two weeks to complete. The beading started with simple necklace, earrings and bangles and moved on to the weaving of bead purse which took them a week, followed by the making of slippers and other complex necklace, earrings and bangles.

MACRAME
The third week was used for macramé.
Macramé is the weaving of cords to create craft items such as table mat, wall hanging, Door mat, Bags, Curtains, Pillow case, to mention few,
The trainees were thought how to weave with cords, where each of them chose any of the above list craft items as a project to work on.

After three weeks of intensive training, the program came to an end. The training program was successful and the trainees were satisfied with what they have learnt.

Some 50 persons Living with Disabilities (PWD) have received their share from the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly’s (ACMA) Disability Fund.

The 50 were shortlisted from 114 PWDs who applied for the fund and were vetted.

Out of the 50, 27 received items such as deep freezers, laptops, sewing machines, refrigerators, photocopier machines, and popcorn machines, while one will undergo an apprenticeship programme. The remaining 22 will receive support in the form of perishable and non-perishable items to sell, including frozen fish, water, soft drinks, call cards, make-up accessories among others.

DISBURSEMENT

At a ceremony to hand over the items to the beneficiaries, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji Mohammed Quaye, explained that the move was in fulfillment of the government’s responsibility to support PWDs in the country as enshrined in the Constitution. He observed that with the needed support and opportunities, PWDs could drive the country’s economy forward, adding that disability was not inability, hence PWDs could not look down on themselves. “The potential of PWDs can be realized with the right assistance,” he said. He urged them to put the items to good use in order to derive the desired results needed to empower them economically.

The MCE further urged the beneficiaries to desist from selling the items donated to them.

“I promise to promote all PWDS within the ACMA as I have always done and it is my desire that all PWDs excel in whatever they do,’’ Alhaji Quaye said.

Monitoring

the Chairman of the assembly’s Disability Fund, Mr Abubakar Alhassan, noted that the monitoring team would embark on occasional visits to ensure the items are being used for their intended purposes.

The beneficiaries, on the other hand, thanked the assembly for the gesture and pledged to use the items to better their lives.

THE MEMBER of Parliament (MP) for the Ayawaso Central Constituency, Henry Quartey, has cut the sod for the construction of a modern 12-unit classroom block at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Cluster of Schools at Kokomlemle in Accra.

He was joined by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly (ACMA), Alhaji Mohammed Quaye, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Coastal Development Authority (CODA), Jerry Ahmed Shaib, traditional leaders and residents in a ceremony to officially hand over the project to the contractors.

In a brief address, the MCE for ACMA, Alhaji Mohammed Quaye, conveyed the appreciation of his assembly to President Akufo-Addo and Henry Quartey for “giving us this project.”

He assured the contractors of his and the assembly’s cooperation throughout the duration of the project and urged them to work with diligence to ensure uninterrupted execution of the project.

“It is our anticipation that the engineers and other workers who would be engaged to undertake the project would approach their work diligently and ensure that it is completed on scheduled,” he entreated.

Henry Quartey, MP for the Ayawaso Central Constituency, on his part, stated that the project was part of three projects being undertaken by CODA using the constituency’s share of government’s allocation of the ‘One Constituency; $1 million program.

He said after several consultations with stakeholders in the constituency, they arrived at the decision to propose three projects, namely an AstroTurf, the building of a school or classroom block, and converting an existing office complex into a children’s hospital, all of which was approved by CODA.

“The AstroTurf has started already. The President cut the sod for that. And today we are witnessing the sod cutting for the 12-unit classroom block here.

“Very soon we will be going to Kotobabi to ensure that the continuation of the office complex is done for us to have a children’s hospital in Ayawaso Central,” he stated.

The project is expected to span four months barring any unforeseen circumstances.

“We pray that barring any last-minute challenges this project will be concluded, commissioned, and handed over to the Ghana Education Service for them to put it to use,” he said.

THE AYAWASO Central Municipal Assembly (ACMA) has inaugurated two zonal councils and 12 unit committees to help in the running of its affairs at the local level.
At a ceremony held on its forecourt at Kokomlemle in Accra last Wednesday, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mohammed Quaye, swore in duly elected members to their respective units.
He disclosed that the assembly, at its first ordinary meeting held in July this year, approved the establishment of two zonal councils and 12 unit committees for the assembly.
“The setting up of the zonal councils and unit committees is backed by law and the purpose is to ensure the full involvement of the people of our local communities in the decision-making processes of the assembly,” he said.
They are the Alajo-Pigfarm Zonal Council, which comprises of Alajo North and Central, Pig Farm, Nii Nortey Agbo, Quaye Mensah and Kotobabi Electoral Area; and the Mallam Atta Zonal Council, which also comprises of Nkansah Djan, Aryee Diki, Mallam Atta, Akoa Ndor and the Kokomlemle East and West Electoral Areas.
“What is important is that no one person can do the job alone. We need the support of all. We need to respect ourselves and the technocrats who help us implement our policies, programmes, and projects. We need to carry and position ourselves well for the task ahead. We need to be selfless and responsible to our core mandates since posterity will not forgive us if we fail our people,” he entreated.
He pledged his unflinching support to the newly inaugurated councils and committees, and assured that his office would soon begin a training session to equip them with the technical know-how to go about their duties effectively.
The role of the unit committees includes education, organization of communal labour and ensuring environmental cleanliness, revenue generation, registration of births and deaths, implementation and monitoring of self-help projects among others.
As part of their functions the zonal councils will help the assembly collect revenue, recommend to the district assembly streets and property to be named and numbered, help organize annual congress of the assembly and carry out environmentally friendly projects such as planting of trees.
